Our First Solo Showdown: K-Town Pit Que at the Loudoun Rotary BBQ Classic
This past weekend, the K-Town Pit Que crew packed up the smokers, loaded the gear, and hit the road for our first solo competition at the Loudoun Rotary BBQ Classic. We were one of 13 teams battling it out for BBQ glory—and for our first time out on our own (no help from the master series pros we’ve teamed up with in the past), we held our own and landed right in the middle of the pack. Not bad at all for the debut of the solo squad!
Friday Setup: Sunshine, Smores & Storm Prep
We rolled in on Friday and got our site set up while the sun was shining and birds were chirping—classic false sense of security. The kids roasted smores, the meats got trimmed, injected, and prepped, and after a good dinner (and a few adult beverages), we turned in for the night.
And that’s when Mother Nature decided to remind us who’s boss.
The rain came—and boy did it rain. Then came the wind. We were lucky our tent held up. Some other teams weren’t so fortunate.
Saturday Morning: Meat Meets Fire
At 3:00 AM sharp, the real work began.
Smokers were lit. Rubs were applied. Cook plans were in full swing. We staggered the meats—money muscle and pork butts went on first, followed by ribs, and finally chicken. As everything came together, we realized we had some secret weapons in the crew:
Kim, the Dessert Queen – turns out she’s also a garnish and boxing ninja. Every turn-in box looked like a masterpiece.
Micah, the Brisket Warrior – pulled pork duty for People’s Choice, and crushed it.
Jonah, the Ribeye Knight – our equipment manager, logistics wrangler, and general morale booster.
It was truly a family effort, which is exactly what K-Town Pit Que is all about: family, community, and having a damn good time.
The Results
Despite the weather and being the new kids running solo, we walked away with:
🐔 6th in Chicken
🐖 8th in Ribs
🐷 5th in Pork.
These are some seriously seasoned competitors we were up against, so we couldn’t be prouder of our performance and team effort. Thank you to all the friends who braved the rain to cheer us on. Your support means the world.
🎯 What’s Next?
With our first comp in the books, we’re already prepping for the next one: Kennett Square, PA – July 12, 2025 (also known as the Mushroom Capital of the U.S. 🍄). We’ll bring the smoke—hopefully not the storm clouds.
Until then, keep the fire lit 🔥 and the flavors bold.
